International Board Certification in Aesthetic Medicine does not exist.

Currently no organization or association can officially offers “international board certification” that is accepted by all countries

Physicians like to be board certified in any specialty and are attracted by the thought of having an international certification that can be used anywhere.  Many physicians spent large sum of money to obtain these so call international board certifications by private companies and organizations only to realized that they are not recognized any particular country.

The American Board of Aesthetic Medicine provides training in aesthetic medicine for all physicians, regardless of specialties.  We feel that our training is the most comprehensive among the many programs that offer similar training.  ABAM’s courses are taught only by experienced and practicing physician instructors.  Our training includes basic and necessary knowledge that many other programs often neglect.   Basic knowledge in pharmacology, laser & light physics, and anatomy (skin/hair/muscle) is a mandatory part of our curriculum.  All of our courses consist of hands-on training.

Establishment of The American Board of Aesthetic Medicine - ABAM

ABAM is an independent specialty board. There are many independent boards existing within any specialty. ABAM is the only board of aesthetic medicine in the US.  ABAM was established to provide a standardized pathway for physicians coming from a non-cosmetic background to be certified in aesthetic medicine. Physicians from a variety of medical fields are now adding aesthetic procedures to their practices, and a formal training and certification process for them is essential. Presently, the only approved training pathways for aesthetic medicine is plastic surgery or dermatology which are not open to other specialties. By providing this certification ABAM contributes to the improvement of the quality of care in the field of aesthetic medicine.

ABAM do not have any affiliation with any other organizations. As an independent board we have our own process of certification and requirement. ABAM is not part of the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties).

ABAM certified physicians have demonstrated that they have the proper training, clinical skills, and knowledge essential for the safe and excellent practice of aesthetic medicine.  Certification by the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine also indicates that the physician has met the clinical and educational criteria to be eligible to sit for a comprehensive and rigorous written examination, and has successfully passed the examination.
